1865 First Auxiliary founded in St. Catharines, Ontario 1910 Thirty-six hospitals met to form an amalgamated society: “The United Hospital Aids Association” and first Annual Meeting held in Kitchener (then called Berlin) 1912 First official membership pin 1920 First annual membership fee; $1 per Hospital Aid organization 1921 First constitution approved by membership 1924 Advisory Committee formed to meet more than once a year 1925 First two-day Annual Meeting held 1926 Introduction of Provincial Life Membership 1930 Now called “The Women’s Hospital Aids Association” 1931 WHAA first holds annual meeting con-jointly with the American Hospital Association in the Automotive Building at the C.N.E. 1935 The Association began to hold its annual Convention concurrent with the OHA Convention – Fundraising by the 58 affiliated Aids produced $32,000 (in the middle of the Great Depression). 1945 Fee per member group raised from $3 per year to $10 per year 1947 First financial statement published for circulation - WHAA pins cost 75 cents - 65 member Aids fundraise over $100,000 for their hospitals 1950 Name changed to “Women’s Hospital Auxiliary Association, Province of Ontario” - Revised Constitution states “The President’s term will be two years”. 1953 Start of a regional structure, based on OHA’s 12 regions, with OHA Region 12 becoming 12A and 12B 1954 Monthly provincial newsletter established, named the “Volunteer” and sponsored by OHA (replacing a smaller volunteer news sheet) - 103 member auxiliaries fundraise just over half a million dollars 1958 Region structure completed - workshops introduced at Convention - Provincial Life Membership book established to record member’s names 1959 OHA establishes a central office and paid secretarial help for WHAA - provincial coordinator of Volunteer Services hired by OHA - smock crests were introduced (cost: fifty cents) 1960 WHAA crest designed to celebrate the Golden Jubilee - almost $900,000 is raised in fundraising efforts by member auxiliaries 1961 Director of Regions established - first “Institute of Volunteer Services in Hospitals” (held in Toronto) 1962 Name changed to Hospital Auxiliaries Association (HAA) - twenty one auxiliaries have Teenage Volunteers programme - men are now making a significant contribution - fundraising by the 200 member groups produces just over $1,000,000 1963 “Operating Rules for Regions” handbook was put into use 1964 Margaret Fraser Award established for a worthy student entering Nursing 1965 First manual for volunteers produced - the name “Regions” was changed to “Districts” 1966 Institutes (“mini conventions”) were held in Toronto and Ottawa 1967 Institutes held in Toronto and London 1968 First Teen volunteer manual prepared 1970 Celebration for the “Diamond Jubilee” held at Convention 1972 Three Institutes were held: Don Mills; Barrie and Kenora 1973 HAA withdrew from Canadian Association of Healthcare Auxiliaries (CAHA) 1974 1st HAA Photo Contest was held 1976 The Volunteer published bi-monthly 1977 Fundraising by the 223 member Auxiliaries is over $2,500,000 1978 Institutes were held in Don Mills and Thunder Bay - five issues of the Volunteer per year 1979 Institutes were held in Don Mills and Kirkland Lake - extensive revamping of job descriptions for Officers, Board and Committees 1980 Institutes were held in Don Mills and Sudbury - a special session for Teenage Volunteers was added to Convention - fundraising by 220 member group surpasses $6,000,000 1981 HAA rejoined CAHA 1982 Institutes were held in Don Mills and Kapuskasing - four issues of the Volunteer produced annually - “Districts” were changed back to “Regions” 1983 Margaret Fraser Award replaced by HAA Teen Award - fundraising by the 217 member group reaches $10,000,000 1985 Gala Banquet and activities held. Historical booklet printed for 75th Anniversary 1986 Education fund established to give financial assistance to Auxiliaries/Associations to educate their members 1987 Name changes to Hospital Auxiliaries Associations of Ontario (HAAO) 1988 New Constitution developed and established a board of 24 (13 Region chairmen plus 11 Executive) - 1st Memorandum of Understanding” with OHA 1989 HAAO established as a charitable organization with Revenue Canada - HELPP (Hospital Equipment Lottery Programme for People) business was initiated - trademark registered 1991 Mission statement adopted (which substituted “community partnerships” for “hospitals”) 1992 Quality Assurance Questionnaire circulated among member Auxiliaries - Regions 12A and 12B became 12 East and 12 West 1993 First deposit of HAAO material to the Archives of Ontario 1995 Fee Structure for members based on global budgets of their facilities - education video produced - fundraising by the 209 member groups tops $21,000,000 - 926 delegates at Convention 1996 HAAO offices move to 200 Front Street West, Toronto (from Don Mills) - HAAO pays OHA for one extra day per week for administrative assistance from OHA Education Department (total of three days a week) 1997 No longer necessary to be entering a health-related field to qualify for a Student Award; volunteering is the key factor to entitlement 1998 HAAO Memorial Honour Roll inaugurated 1999 HAAO is incorporated in the Province of Ontario by Letters Patent - By-Law #1 established to govern HAAO 2000 Celebrated 90th Anniversary at Annual Convention - 184 member Auxiliaries/Associations raised over $35,000,000 2001 United Nations “Year of Volunteers” - HAAO received Outstanding Achievement Award from the Province of Ontario - fee structure based on number of beds in facility - HAAO administrative assistant employed four days weekly 2002 HAAO Honorary Life Membership Pin is introduced (the actual honour has been in effect for many years) - HAAO website goes online 2003 HAAO logo is mounted in OHA lobby - HAAO withdraws from CAHA - SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) affects all Ontario healthcare facilities 2004 Student awards (2) raised from $750 to $1,000 - guidelines established for preparing a “Policy & Procedure Manual” for HAAO members - 1st HAAO/OHA/PAVR-O Joint Seminar (education event) held, instigated by HAAO 2005 Established a grant to attend the Joint Seminar 2006 OHA Board restructuring results in HAAO no longer having representation 2007 Position of Director of External Affairs eliminated - Board consists of 23 members (10 executive and 13 Region chairmen) - administrative assistant employed 4 days weekly 2008 Regions reduced to 12 (combining Regions 4 and 5) 2010 Regions named: South West (1); South Central (2); Central (3); Golden Horseshoe (4/5); Toronto (6); Central East (7); South East (8); Ontario East (9); North Central (10); James Bay (11); Superior North (12E); North West (12W). - 100TH Anniversary Gala Banquet held - Anniversary book produced (combining with the 75th anniversary book) 2011 10th International Year of the Volunteer
