1952 A special Committee on Regions was formed within the WHA - the province was divided into regions because of the large membership (25,000 in 106 auxiliaries) - regions conformed to the 12 OHA regions 1954 A Regional Convenor was named and 5 regions formed 1957 13 regions were formed - the position of Secretary of Regions was established as a member of the Executive - fees were collected from auxiliaries by Regions as membership and to cover expenses in their respective Regions 1959 WHA Constitution was amended to remove the Committee on Regions 1961 Office of Director of Regions was established - fees were increased by the provincial association and all auxiliaries who were members of WHA were automatically members of the region - Provincial President requested that the Region chairmen not be called Regional Presidents: “Regions are an organization subdivision of the Provincial, set up to assist both the Provincial and the Auxiliary to improve their service to hospitals”.
Regional expenses were to be met as follows:
1. The Women’s Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario will pay rail fare of all Regional Chairmen to the Board Meeting in May and the October Convention (with $15 per diem allowance for accommodation and meals at Convention). 2. The provincial Association will give each region $10 to meet the expenses of Regional Chairmen to Region meetings and incidental expenses such as postage 3. The provincial Association will supply stationery and meeting notice forms 4. A registration fee (suggested 25 cents) will be charged to each attendee to cover expenses of the Regional meeting 5. If a Regional Chairman is required to make a trip to an auxiliary in her region, it will be covered by the provincial President’s Travelling Fund if it is authorized by the President.
1962 The first meeting of Region Chairmen was held at the time of May board meetings The first Director of Regions urged Region Chairmen to resolve to: • Encourage auxiliary members to realize they are members of a province-wide association. • Encourage unified efforts toward common objectives. • Stimulate wider horizons and compassion for the less fortunate”.
1965 Regions were re-named “Districts” and Region 12 was divided into 12A and 12B 1982 Districts again became Regions 1988 A new HAAO Constitution was adopted with a 24 member Board which included 13 Region Chairmen. The 11 member Executive included 6 Directors, one of whom was the Director of Regions 1992 Regions 12A and 12B became 12 East and 12 West 2008 Regions 4 and 5 were combined 2010 The twelve Regions were named (former # in brackets). South West (1); South Central (2); Central (3); Golden Horseshoe (4/5); Toronto (6); Central East (7); South East (8); Ontario East (9); North Central (10); James Bay (11); Superior North (12E); North West (12W).
