We keep receiving and giving at the Hospital Auxiliary of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Elliot Lake!  For a community which has a majority of fixed income families there is an abundance of charitable donations which is truly gratifying.  We have exceptionally dedicated members who have been able to fundraise a generous amount to purchase vital equipment, i.e., a delivery room NICC, two defibrillator solutions and four vital sign monitor solutions.  This May the proceeds of our annual Tag Day will be dedicated to an electrotherapy ultrasound for the physiotherapy department.  Our hearts beat faster when we can provide.

To be able to give, we have had a few fundraising activities this winter in addition to our regular Gift Shop.  In Elliot Lake, we love to eat!  To that end, we have had two wonderful dinners – a filling spaghetti feast in January followed by a fantastic “Taste of Italy” dinner the next month.  Margery Sawyer, our event convener, in conjunction with our Auxiliary volunteers plus the talented Hospital dietary staff satisfies everyone’s taste buds. These dinners are always sold out in a few days.
In addition to our Tag Day mentioned above, our group will be having a Potluck Supper in tandem with our membership drive in April. This is a very enjoyable event.  Near the end of our membership year on April 27 as a group we will be celebrating Canada’s 150th Birthday celebration with you guessed it – a dinner!   Along with a menu of Canadian created foods we will venture back into the past of both Canada and Elliot Lake.   The local history may be new to many as we have many members who have relocated here in the recent past.

In May, we will select a recipient from each of our two local high schools to receive a bursary from the Auxiliary.   Each student must be entering the medical field at the post-secondary level. It is truly an honour to assist these young people to realize their potential.  Finally we end the year with our Annual General Meeting which wraps up our satisfied goals and we look forward to another successful 2017-18 year.~ Submitted by Lee Buck
